The English for Humanities program is designed for both pre-work students and those already working. The program provides students and adult learners with the language skills necessary to specialize in a Liberal Arts program or pursue a degree in the Social Sciences.

Students can practice English language skills in the following areas:

Language skills practiced in the program include conversational skills, vocabulary for the humanities, doing presentations and writing reports.

*The English for Humanities program does not teach total beginners. If you speak no English, this program is not right for you. Prospective students planning to enroll in this program must be able to speak, understand, write, and read English sentences before coming to the English for Humanities program.


Delivery Formats

The English for Humanities program sessions meet for 12 hours per week. There will be 7 hours of classroom instruction and 5 hours of project-based field trips, excursions and activities with or without your instructors.

The students will visit various places of interest. The specific locations will depend on the instructor, the students’ level and the interests of the group. Before each visit, students will prepare by reading, listening and discussing themes and topics relevant to the trip. Then, while visiting, they will complete specific tasks designed by the instructors to guide their visit and develop their English. Then, following each trip, there will be follow-up activities, discussion work and writing assignments to consolidate learning experiences.

Sample trips may include: various museums around Singapore, places of interest related to art, history or the social sciences.


Certificate Award

Students will be conferred the Certificate in English for Humanities when they have successfully met the above graduation requirements and attained approval from the Academic and Examination Board of Institute of Arts and Sciences. Students who fulfill their graduation requirements will receive their certification within 3 months from their final examination results date.


Tri-Semester System

The School's class (non-online) calendar are based on tri-semester system.

  • Spring Semester: January to May
  • Summer Semester: June to August
  • Fall Semester: September to December

Class Sessions

Classess are conducted during one or more of the following sessions.

  • Morning (Monday to Saturday)
    0800 — 1000 hour
    1030 — 1230 hour
  • Afternoon (Monday to Saturday)
    1330 — 1530 hour
    1600 — 1800 hour
  • Night Session (Monday to Friday only)
    1900 — 2100 hour
